Artist Spotlight: ARTLOVER

Instagram @artlovermusic

ARTLOVER, a London-based South Korean rapper, will be releasing her debut single "Want U Back" on March 2nd. She

has a background in fashion, specifically as a make-up artist, having worked with the likes of Elle and Vogue. The aesthetic sense leftover from her years in fashion is pervasive in all aspects of her rapping career - from her styling to her music.

We had a chance to talk with ARTLOVER and learn a little more about her story.

First of all, I'm curious. Can you explain your name choice?

When I hear music, I can feel lots of colors. And I love creating my vision and combining it with music to share my emotions and communicate with people. I feel that ”ARTLOVER” perfectly captured this concept.

We're excited for your debut single to drop on March 2. Listening to "Want U Back," we hear a lot of retro soul pop influences. What other music genres are you influenced by?

That’s great to hear! When I write music, I follow my instinct. When I made the chords for “Want U Back”, I was feeling the Jazz in them, so that’s absolutely an inspiration. Also, the strings and instrumentation sort of feels that way.

You can also hear a bit of rock sounds in “Want U Back” with strong guitars and drums, thanks to co-producer, Max Billion, who is a rock musician. So that’s a few different influences.

Music is a very visual experience for many. You even created the cover art for your album! How does your creative and fashion background influence your music?

I learned how to develop a unique idea and creative direct it when I was student in London College of Fashion, and after I got into the fashion industry I could learn how to corporate with people and what makes a professional standard. I have had a lot of use for these doctrines in my music creation process.

So after being involved with fashion, what is it that led you to pursue a career as a rapper?

I started rapping because it felt natural to me. I sang first, but there is something about the Korean culture that suits rapping. It was natural for me as I grew up with traditional Korean music.

Many artists have goals in mind that they strive to achieve - awards, sales, artistic development, etc. You're just starting your music career. What are you hoping to achieve?

I want to be an entertaining artist and be part of bringing pop culture forward.

And finally, any words you'd like to share with listeners new to you and your music?

“Want U Back” is a story about love so strong that you would be lucky to feel it once in your life, and how you miss the strong passion when it’s gone. I really hope your readers will like my music.

Keep up with ARTLOVER on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and through her website!
