iKON - Love Scenario

I was entirely hooked by iKON’s new song, "Love Scenario." So much so, that I've had their whole Return album on repeat. "Love Scenario" is a melodic hip-hop track that reminisces on the memories after the end of a love story.

It’s a certified bop, literally, being the second boy group to ever achieve a perfect all kill (PAK). A PAK happens when a song tops at number one on all major real-time and daily charts (Melon, Genie, Bugs, Mnet, Naver, & Soribada), as well as Instiz Realtime iChart and Weekly iChart. Prior to iKON, Big Bang was the only other male idol group to have achieved a PAK. Congrats, iKON!

Hyolyn - To Do List

Hyolyn, former member of the now-disbanded girl group, SISTAR, finally released her first single for her debut project under her self-founded, independent label, Brid3 (pronounced “bridge”). The first of the three planned singles is called, “To Do List,” and it is seriously gorgeous. Her lavish voice is perfectly complemented by the minimalist instrumentals, and, honestly, I think this is the best Hyolyn has ever sounded. Get a glimpse of Hyolyn’s practice of hitting those high notes for “To Do List” with her vocal coach.

Seventeen - Thanks

Every time I naively think Seventeen can’t possibly get any better, they come back and floor me with consistently great music and performances. Their stunning EDM track, “Thanks,” is a dramatic, yet beautifully understated song. The urgent rhythm, the humble lyrics, and the unique energy that only Seventeen provides, all build up a sense of desperation and passion. You can hear it in the way they sing as if their life depended on it.

And, the choreography… do I even need to elaborate? Their strength has always been the perfect synchronization in their hard-hitting moves. But, this performance is different, and smartly so. Like the passion heard in the music and lyrics, Seventeen delivers a powerful MV and dance performance full of emotion and layered with technical complexities.

Mona - Run Away

I don’t mean to give away a twist, but this song has got quite a twist. From artist Mona, out of Mirrorball Music, we get “Run Away.” This is off Mona’s first EP, When, which contains six tracks and explores the meaning of time and memories. "Run Away" opens with Mona’s strong, yet sweet voice vocalizing over an acoustic piano. Eventually, strings join the group, adding in some harmonies. After the first chorus, the beat suddenly drops into an electro bass instrumental, which totally changes the whole vibe. The song went from a simple acoustic r&b track to a deeper, more soulful song. I listened to this track without expecting much and was pleasantly surprised to hear something a little different. I hope to see more from Mona in the future.
