Red Velvet - Bad Boy

Red Velvet’s newest title track, “Bad Boy,” swept the real time charts this week when the group released their repackaged album, The Perfect Red Velvet. A sultry, pop hit, “Bad Boy” is accompanied by a noir-esque music video. The girls show off their ‘velvet’ side with subtle choreography laced with sexuality and a fair dose of hip rolls. The song has some really interesting rhythms vocally, changing up from staccato verses to a more smooth R&B chorus.

I always lean towards darker, more mature songs so Red Velvet really hits the sweet spot with “Bad Boy.” It is probably one of my favorite Red Velvet songs yet.

BoA - Nega Dola

She’s been in the game for 19 years and she’s still delivering fire. BoA dropped some of the most amazing teaser photos for “Nega Dola” so I was really looking forward to its release. She didn’t disappoint.

BoA, who always delivers with her dance performance, brings it again in this MV. She kills it alongside her back-up dancers, decked out in some 90’s inspired attire. The title translates to “I’m Going Crazy,” and is all about trying to shake that person who is just a little too obsessed. Sorry BoA, we all just kinda think you’re awesome.

Suzy - Holiday (Feat. DPR LIVE)

Suzy warms up this cold winter with a warm and breezy R&B title track, “Holiday,” from her sophomore solo EP, Faces of Love. “Holiday" starts with the sound of a piano and hushed synths and transitions into a jazzy number, punctuated with a gentle beat and Suzy’s delicate vocals. DPR LIVE injects such a cool vibe with his verses that I wish his part lasted a little longer.

I don’t need to say much about the music video other than the fact that it is seriously gorgeous. Over four minutes of a stunning Suzy in equally breathtaking sceneries - basking on an expensive boat, taking a stroll on desert sands under a clear blue sky, and lounging by the pool. The coloring is perfect and lends a luxurious feel to the already lush visuals.

VAV - Spotlight

Wow. If you recall, I briefly mentioned in the past that, after some time, VAV was finally starting to jive as a group at the beginning of 2017. This was following the departure of some of the original members for other activities, plus the addition of three new members and a new production team.

The hard work has paid off with what I would definitely call their best release in “Spotlight." While the track is simply a faultless mainstream K-pop song, it is an extremely easy-on-the-ears, smooth, and hypnotizing listen. The vocals and instrumentals are great, and the rap breaks are spot on. The music video - oh, the music video *hands up emoji* - is a clear showcase of how much VAV has grown and improved in both performance and production. From a bird’s eye view, “Spotlight" has Monsta X-meets-Blood, Sweat, & Tears (BTS) visuals, not to mention the rich production really gives me VIXX vibes.

As a previously casual listener of VAV, I’m now a full-on stan in less than four minutes.

Hui & Hongseok - Already Winter (Cover)

Hui and Hongseok, both from Pentagon, released a cover of the song “Already Winter.” Originally sung by Huh Gak and Vromance, (now that's a music video) the track is an emotional ballad that compares the loneliness of a break-up with the bitterness of winter. Hui and Hongseok cover this vocally challenging song beautifully. Hui’s vibratto and Hongseok’s lower pitched voice are velvety smooth and each holds their own in their respective verses. The harmonizations between the two powerhouse singers will give you chills. This cover is a reminder to not sleep on Pentagon!
